The Federal Highway Administration announced a new grant program to support the creation of safe active transportation projects. Active transportation focuses on using mobility options powered primarily by human energy, such as bicycling and walking, and provides positive health impacts. These competitive grants will assist communities plan, design, or construct safe and connected active transportation networks such as sidewalks, bikeways, and trails that connect destinations such as schools, workplaces, residences, businesses, recreation areas and medical facilities within a community or metropolitan region. The funding is available to local governments among other government entities and especially seeks projects that will serve as backbones to connect two or more communities, metropolitan regions or states.
