Equity-Related Definitions

The following definitions are applied in the context of local government:

Equitable

All members of the community receive a fair share in benefits, participate equitably in civic decision-making, and feel recognized and included in community life. (See Sustainable Jersey equity report for the complete equity framework and definition).

Anti-Racist

Local governments identify, understand, and root out structures and biases that perpetuate racism. This entails rebalancing power and privilege in the process of working to undo the legacies of past systemic discrimination imposed on Black, Indigenous, and other people of color.

Opposing Oppression in All Forms

Local governments employ work to identify, understand and root out biases and practices that perpetuate discrimination or exclusion based on any form of social difference and marginalization, such as poverty, ethnicity, age, (dis)ability, gender, sexual orientation, and immigration status.
