$160,000 in Funding Awarded to 12 Sustainable Energy Projects Across New Jersey

Grant recipients from eight NJ counties: Atlantic, Bergen, Camden, Hudson, Mercer, Monmouth, Somerset and Sussex
Sustainable Jersey announced today the two public school districts and ten municipalities selected to receive Sustainable Jersey grants funded by the Gardinier Environmental Fund. Two $30,000 grants and ten $10,000 grants were distributed to fund proposals for electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure and education; a solar energy feasibility study and community solar education; and innovative energy efficiency projects in school facilities and municipal buildings.
“We’re giving local communities the help they need to drive down energy costs and emissions,” said Randall Solomon, executive director of Sustainable Jersey. “These grant recipients demonstrate leadership and a commitment to advancing climate action that will help New Jersey meet more ambitious targets moving forward toward a low-carbon future.”

This year Sustainable Jersey is celebrating its tenth anniversary and a decade of impact, including the implementation of creative energy projects via the Gardinier Environmental Fund grants. Overall, since 2009 the Sustainable Jersey Grants Program has distributed over $4.9 million in grants to New Jersey schools and municipalities to help make their communities more livable, environmentally friendly and prosperous.

Atlantic | Egg Harbor City | $10,000 | Solar Feasibility Study: Egg Harbor City will engage a professional engineer to conduct a solar feasibility study and create a plan to procure and install solar panels at city-owned buildings. This initiative will lead to future solar installation projects that will help save money and reduce Egg Harbor City's carbon footprint. |
Bergen | Leonia Borough | $30,000 | Sustainable Fleet Creation: The Borough of Leonia will purchase an electric vehicle (EV) to be used by the police department as part of their plan to create a municipal fleet of EVs. The Borough will be purchasing two electric vehicle charging stations and educating residents and visitors about the benefits of switching to EVs. |
Bergen | Park Ridge Borough | $10,000 | Municipal EV Fleet Initiative: Park Ridge is continuing its effort to become an Electric Vehicle, (EV) friendly community. This grant would further help the municipality move towards this goal with the purchase of an Electric Vehicle for municipal use. This grant will help Park Ridge become a leader in promoting municipal adoption of EVs, and reduce carbon emissions with the municipal fleet. The municipality will purchase a new or used electric vehicle and will match approximately $10,000 towards the cost for the vehicle. |
Camden | Camden City Public Schools | $30,000 | Designing an Energy-Smart Camden: The Camden City School District will design and enact a comprehensive Energy Savings Plan using data collected from a Local Government Energy Audit and comprehensive Facilities Condition Assessments of each school. The Energy Savings Plan is the basis for utilizing the BPU’s ESIP program that will allow the School District to finance for the efficiency upgrades with the energy cost savings from the upgrades. |
Hudson | Hoboken City | $10,000 | Deep Submetering and Continuous Commissioning Project: The City of Hoboken will implement an innovative energy efficiency project at Hoboken City Hall that includes the installation of a submetering system, use of cloud-based circuit monitoring software and panel surveying and labeling. The energy consumption data collected will be used to inform strategic investments in preventative maintenance, employee behavioral programs and changes to the building envelope. |
Mercer | Princeton | $10,000 | A Municipal Toolkit for Community Solar: Princeton will create and demonstrate a step-by-step toolkit to educate municipal officials and residents on the benefits of community solar. They will identify priority array sites in Princeton and build the momentum necessary to get subscribers signed-on, with particular focus dedicated to engaging low- and moderate-income residents. |
Mercer | West Windsor-Plainsboro Regional School District | $10,000 | Energy Reduction Competition: The West Windsor-Plainsboro Regional School District will establish an energy tracking and management system for all ten schools, provide professional development for facilities staff and school green team leaders and create an energy reduction competition amongst all schools. This will increase energy awareness, reduce operational costs, create unique opportunities for students to have an impact in their schools and stimulate further activity among green teams. |
Monmouth | Lake Como Borough | $10,000 | Increasing Visibility of EV Charging Stations: The Lake Como Green Team will install an EV charging station in the parking lot at Lake Como Borough Hall to increase the visibility of electric vehicles. The initiative will bring in business to the municipality; those traveling to the Jersey Shore in an EV can refuel at Lake Como. |
Somerset | Bridgewater Township | $10,000 | EV Education Initiative: Bridgewater Township will install two EV charging stations for public and employee use at the municipal complex. Residents will be educated on the stations and the benefits of driving an EV at green team events. |
Somerset | Warren Township | $10,000 | Strategic EV Charging Stations: Warren Township will install a level two dual port EV charging station that will be available to the public. Due to its strategic location between Route 22 and Interstate Route 78, the stations will have high visibility. EVs will be promoted through an EV Ride and Drive event. |
Sussex | Hopatcong Borough | $10,000 | Electric Water Heater Innovation Project: The Borough of Hopatcong will install electric instant hot water heaters at ten sinks in its municipal buildings that will isolate energy usage to individual sinks on a per-use basis, ultimately reducing oil-burning furnace usage. |
Sussex | Sparta Township | $10,000 | Increased Access to EV Charging Stations: Sparta Township will purchase three dual port EV charging stations to be placed at Town Hall, the municipal library, and Station Park. These charging stations will provide residents with increased access to public EV charging stations and promote a more environmentally-friendly way of traveling. |
