Brownfields - or vacant and/or underutilized properties where there is known or suspected environmental contamination - can be found in communities throughout New Jersey. There are likely multiple properties in each of New Jersey’s 565 municipalities. These sites sit idle because they are a challenge to sell and their redevelopment may be complicated by the real or perceived presence of environmental contamination. In spite of these challenges, brownfields remediation and redevelopment is a priority for many municipalities to stimulate economic development, mitigate threats to public health, and further communities’ environmental justice goals, so it’s worth the effort.

This webinar, hosted by the Association of New Jersey Environmental Commissions (ANJEC) and the Center for Creative Land Recycling (CCLR) will walk you through the nine steps of brownfield redevelopment outlined in ANJEC and CCLR’s recently updated “Remediating & Redeveloping Brownfields in New Jersey: A Guide for Municipalities and Community Organizations”, devote special attention to the purpose and methods of conducting a brownfields inventory and the Sustainable Jersey Brownfields Inventory & Prioritization action; spotlight land reuse success stories from around New Jersey; and outline the resources available as you and your community embark down the road to redevelopment.
