Atlantic Health System Receives the 2018 Sustainable Business Leadership Award

Sustainable Jersey presented Atlantic Health System with the Sustainable Business Leadership Award which recognizes companies in New Jersey that support the Sustainable Jersey mission and demonstrate a significant commitment to sustainability. 

Representatives of Atlantic Health System accepted the award at Sustainable Jersey’s Annual Awards event on November 13, 2018 which took place in Atlantic City at the New Jersey League of Municipalities Conference. “Atlantic Health System is committed to building healthier communities through innovative and sustainable solutions,” said Carolyn Brown-Dancy, Director, Environmental Health and Safety, Atlantic Health System. “The health of our patients and our planet are top priorities for team members and we are proud to be recognized by Sustainable Jersey for our efforts.”

Atlantic Health System is an outstanding example of how a health care system can take sustainability and community responsibility seriously and contribute locally to improving the quality of life in New Jersey. Randall Solomon, executive director of Sustainable Jersey said, “Atlantic Health System is a registered member of the New Jersey Sustainable Business Registry, with all five of its medical centers registered. Their leadership has pursued recycling and energy saving policies from grassroots employee efforts to large-scale construction projects. They have an employee green team that initiates eco-friendly projects throughout the health care system.” Also, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Morristown Medical Center is certified as a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) building by the U.S. Green Building Council. 

Overlook Medical Center, one of the hospitals in the Atlantic Health System, received the Top 25 Environmental Excellence Award and the Greening the OR Recognition Award. Randall Solomon added, “Overlook medical center’s tri-generation power plant has had a significant impact on reducing the facility’s carbon footprint. The power plant produces four Megawatts of electricity on site by harnessing the waste heat produced by the generators and substitutes steam formerly created by boilers.” All the medical centers are actively transitioning to energy efficient lamps and LED light bulbs through ongoing replacement of old bulbs and fixtures as they reach the end of their life cycle.

Atlantic Health System, headquartered in Morristown, New Jersey, is an integrated health care delivery system with a workforce of more than 16,500 team members and 4,800 affiliated physicians. The system serves a population of five million, with more than 400 sites of care, including six hospitals: Morristown Medical Center, Overlook Medical Center, Newton Medical Center, Chilton Medical Center, Hackettstown Medical Center and Goryeb Children’s Hospital.
