Tools for Schools Workshop Shares How New Jersey Schools Can Save Money and Energy

WHAT: Free workshop open to school administrators and the general public to learn how your
school can get the resources it needs to benchmark its current energy use, reduce its
energy consumption, upgrade its lighting or facilities, or set up an Energy Savings
Improvement Plan. Participation in the workshop will provide clear information on the
many different resources and funding options for schools.

WHEN: 9:30 am - 12:00 noon, Wednesday, February 22, 2012 (light refreshments served)

PROGRAM: Speakers will present:

• Programs and incentives for schools from the NJ BPU’s Clean Energy Program (CEP)
• Free Energy Conservation toolkits from See The Light for schools in the NJ Natural Gas service territory (a $1000 value) 
• How schools can set up Energy Savings Improvement Plans (ESIPs) to learn how to maximize CEP program benefits
• New U.S. Department of Education’s Green Ribbon Schools program and New Jersey’s participation

WHY: Energy is often one of the top expenditures in a school district budget. More money is
spent on energy than on books and computers. Although energy costs continue to rise,
this line item is a controllable element in a school’s annual budget when energy
conservation and efficiency projects are implemented. To locate savings, energy costs
are one of the first places school districts should look. But school districts struggle with
finding the staff time, data and expertise to do an energy analysis. Sustainable Jersey is
helping schools bridge this gap by providing free workshops on the programs and
funding available.

WHO: Sustainable Jersey is a certification program for municipalities in New Jersey. By
supporting community efforts to reduce waste, cut greenhouse gas emissions, and
improve environmental equity, Sustainable Jersey is empowering New Jersey towns to
build a better world for future generations. It provides tools, training and financial
incentives to support and reward communities as they pursue sustainability programs.
Currently, 353 towns are registered and working towards certification. That is 62%
percent of towns from the 566 municipalities in New Jersey. Nearly 75% of New
Jersey’s population lives in registered/certified Sustainable Jersey communities.
