Representatives of the Borough of Tenafly Accept $10,000 Sustainable Jersey Small Grant


34 Towns Win Sustainable Jersey Small Grants Totaling $220,000

The 2010 Sustainable Jersey Small Grants Program funded by Walmart provided grants to 34 local governments for innovative sustainability projects including wind turbines, electric vehicle charging stations and school food composting. Four $25,000 grants were awarded to Chatham Township, City of Long Branch, Montclair Township, and Rutherford Borough. Ten $10,000 grants were awarded to Bay Head Borough, Berkeley Heights Township, Bradley Beach Borough, Englewood City, Ewing Township, Galloway Township, Middletown Township, Ocean City, Tenafly Borough and West Orange Township. 59 Towns Submit Applications for 2010 Sustainable Jersey Certification

Sustainable Jersey has received 59 applications for certification in the 2010 cycle. Applications are now being reviewed for both the Bronze and Silver levels of certification. In 2009, the first year of the certification program, 34 towns were certified. Review the list: 2010 Certification Application List.

National Competition: VOTE FOR SUSTAINABLE JERSEY On-Line!

Sustainable Jersey is one of eight finalists in the Strong Communities: Engaging Citizens, Strengthening Place, Inspiring Change Competition. The competition was designed to identify innovative programs that engage citizens to steer change and build strong, sustainable communities across the United States and Canada. Sustainable Jersey was selected from among 260 entrants. Three grand prize winners will be selected by public online voting. Hottest Ticket Around – Sustainable Jersey Celebration Luncheon Nov. 16.

Don't miss our luncheon at the 95th Annual League Conference. Reserve your space early as last year we nearly reached capacity! We are celebrating year two of the Sustainable Jersey program by recognizing municipalities that have registered, achieved certification and demonstrated outstanding achievement. The event is on Tuesday, November 16, 2010 from 12:00 noon – 1:30 pm. It is $35/person and will be held at the Sheraton Hotel in The Crown Ball Room, 2nd Floor, Atlantic City. New Jersey Natural Gas (NJNG) takes pride in partnering with Sustainable Jersey, serving as a sponsor and supporting municipalities in Monmouth and Ocean counties, and portions of Morris County. Through our Conserve to Preserve initiative, NJNG offers a number of free resources that integrate well with Sustainable Jersey Action Items under Energy Efficiency and Community Partnerships and Outreach. For your facilities and local businesses, NJNG offers Conserve to Preserve Business Online. This free tool includes an energy resource library, "Ask an Expert" hotline and a monthly newsletter filled with conservation tips and energy-related information. NJNG can also help with information on usage for benchmarking, special rates, and incentives available from New Jersey's Clean Energy Program (NJCEP). We just received approval for our Fostering Environmental and Economic Development (FEED) program, which is designed to create customized solutions to encourage the installation of energy-efficient equipment or to facilitate expansion and retention in the state. Sparta and Woodbine Host Mayors Committee for a Green Future/
Sustainable Jersey Events

Green team members, municipal staff, community members and local businesses came together to share ideas for sustainable programs and make new connections with leaders from across the state. Sparta Green Team member Mitch Morrison and Woodbine Mayor William Pikolycky hosted the two events in August. Mayor Pikolycky is also a member of the Mayors Committee for a Green Future (MCGF). Stay tuned, we are planning more events and may be coming to a town near you!
