EXCITING NEWS!

Sustainable Jersey is proud to announce New Jersey’s participation in the new national Green Ribbon Schools (GRS) program, which will recognize exemplary achievement and best practices in the areas of energy efficiency, healthy school environments and sustainability education.

A key element of the GRS program will focus on how successful practices lower operating costs while improving student achievement.

New Jersey is one of 34 states that will implement the GRS program in 2012, its pilot year.  Schools making significant efforts in one or more of the areas cited above are strongly encouraged to apply. The application can also serve as a self-assessment tool for your schools.

Important Deadlines:  Interested schools should email a Letter of Intent to participate in the NJ Green Ribbon Application process by February 6, 2012 to Carol James at

Email the completed NJ Green Ribbon Schools Application and all related documents to Carol James at:

Green Map UPDATE

The first Sustainable Jersey Green Teams have been selected to receive specialized consulting from Green Map System as they create interactive and/or printed Green Maps highlighting sustainability-related, community assets and challenges.

"Thanks to the support of the G. R. Dodge Foundation, our non-profit sustainability mapping organization is able to provide nine communities with specialized mapmaking assistance and also offer workshop support to even more Green Teams in the coming months", said Wendy Brawer, Founding Director of the award-winning Green Map System.

Two collaborative, multi-community proposals were selected, the first from Camden County - including Camden, Galloway and Haddonfield - and the second from central New Jersey -including Hillsborough Twp, Montgomery Twp, Princeton Twp and  Lawrence Twp. Two other cities selected are working independently - Jersey City and Montclair. Each of these communities has been offered direct support as they create engaging strategies for developing a Green Map that both addresses Sustainable Jersey's priorities and generates a compelling way to visualize and connect with local progress toward sustainability. Beyond this direct support, all Green Teams in New Jersey will be able to take advantage of five workshops and webinars that begin in September. Find related information, tools and links to these webinars at www.GreenMap.org/snj and at www.SustainableJersey.com.

Bonner Scholars UPDATE

SUSTAINABLE JERSEY AND BONNER COMMUNITY SCHOLARS TEAM TO WORK WITH 4 NEW JERSEY MUNICIPALITIES

After reviewing 27 outstanding municipal applications for teams of Sustainable Jersey/Bonner Community Scholars, we are pleased to announce that the following municipalities have been selected to participate in the 2011 pilot program:  Burlington City, Green Brook, Mt. Holly and Trenton.

Program staff from the Bonner Center and Sustainable Jersey reviewed the applications and selected the host municipalities based on the types of projects that were proposed, the interest of the scholars in the proposed projects, the ability of the scholars to implement the priority projects in the timeframe available, and the ability of the municipality to supervise the scholars.

For the 2011 pilot program, funding is available for Bonner Community Scholar teams to work with 4 communities.  If this pilot project is a success, we hope to add more communities next year.  Thanks to everyone who applied, and congratulations to those communities who were selected.
