Current Funding Opportunity

Sustainable Jersey is please to announce that the PSEG Foundation is contributing $200,000 to support the Sustainable Jersey Grants Program for municipalities. With this contribution, the PSEG Foundation has contributed over $1.9 million dollars in funding in funding to support local sustainability initiatives in municipalities and schools across the state. The PSEG Foundation's ongoing support of the Grants Program is an excellent example of how public/private partnerships can encourage local grass roots efforts to improve the quality of life in New Jersey.

Application Information

This grant cycle of the 2019 Municipal Grants Program will award:

  • Four (4) $20,000 awards
  • Eight (8) $10,000 awards
  • Twenty (20) $2,000 capacity building awards to support local green teams

Online Application Deadline: Friday, February 15, 2019 at 11:59pm

NOTE: All applications must be submitted using the online application portal via the links above.  You must create an account on the portal to access the grant application.  This account is different from the account used to access your certification application.

Also, please note that each Sustainable Jersey Grant cycle is unique.  Information on previously submitted applications is not carried over from application to application.  Previous applicants must create a new application each cycle.

Informational Webinar

An informational webinar to review the application process, eligibility requirements and tips for successful projects will be held Monday, December 10, from 3:00-4:00pm.  Register here.  Following the webinar, the recording and presentations will be posted on the Webinar Recordings and Presentations page.

Use of Grant Funding

  • Funds for the $10,000 and $20,000 grants must be used to fund all or part of a project that will score points for an action in the Sustainable Jersey program. The Innovative Community Project action is acceptable; in this instance, projects that could lead to new Sustainable Jersey actions will be favored.
  • $2,000 Capacity Building Grant funds can be used for green team expenses.  Funding does not have to be project specific activities. Grant funding may be used for a project that will earn points for an action in the Sustainable Jersey program.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Be a New Jersey municipal government. Funding may be passed through to a non-profit, partner organization, or contractor, but the municipality must be the applicant and will be responsible for the reporting requirements. 
  • Be registered or certified with Sustainable Jersey AND have an active Green Team. Municipalities do not have to be certified in the Sustainable Jersey program to be eligible to receive a grant. Applicants can check to see if their municipality is currently certified here.

Tips for a Successful Grant Application

Successful grant applications often represent innovative projects underway throughout the state, and can act as a model and generate ideas for other municipalities.  Always make sure to carefully review the evaluation criteria, as this is what the selection committee bases their application reviews on.

Review the Sustainability Summit Presentation, "Funding Helps! Tips for a Successful Grant Application," to examine the key components of the evaluation criteria, and also read about some of the lessons learned from past grant projects.  Keep these things in mind as you develop your grant proposal so that it is clear, concise, and doable within the performance period.
